“Updates on Clinical Islet Transplants for Type 1 and Surgical Diabetes”

About the Speaker:
Melena Bellin, MD, is an associate professor of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes and the director of research for islet autotransplantation at the University of Minnesota. She completed her medical school, pediatric residency and endocrinology fellowship at the University of Minnesota, where she currently holds a tenure-track joint position in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Surgery (Schulze Diabetes Institute).
Dr. Bellin’s research focus is on islet transplantation (transplantation of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas) for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and for patients who have their pancreas removed to treat severe chronic pancreatitis. She has been the PI or Co-I on multiple trials in clinical islet transplantation for type 1 and surgical diabetes. Her experience has included acting as the co-investigator at the University of Minnesota for the Clinical Islet Transplantation (CIT) alloislet transplant consortium, serving as a member of the metabolic committee for the CIT consortium, and participating in clinical trials involving DPP-4 inhibitor therapy in autoislet transplant recipients.
Dr. Bellin’s clinical focus includes islet transplant medicine, pediatric and adult pancreatectomy and islet autotransplant medicine, pediatric diabetes and pediatric endocrinology.
