Coit Seminars: Addressing the Opioid Crisis Through Community featuring Dr. Suzanne Amato Nesbit

Dr. Nesbit is currently on the Palliative Care Service and the Neuroscience Pain Resource Team and is the Residency Director for the PGY2 Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacy Residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Nesbit is a Clinical Specialist in Pain Management and Palliative Care with the Department of Pharmacy and holds faculty appointments in the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins and Schools of Pharmacy at the University of Maryland and Notre Dame University. Recently, she was named co-chair for The Johns Hopkins Health System Opioid Stewardship Clinical Community.

Practicing pain management for more than 30 years, Dr. Nesbit has chaired the Pain Management Subcommittee of the Maryland Cancer Plan, the Pain & Palliative Care PRN of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), the American Society of Health- Systems Pharmacists Pain and Palliative Care Section Advisory Group. In 2016, she was appointed to the Joint Commission Technical Advisory Panel for Pain Management. In 2018, she was appointed to a workgroup developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that will focus on estimating opioid prescribing based on best practices and on actual prescription fills. She has served on the Board of Regents for the ACCP from 2012-2015 and currently serves as ACCP President (2017-2020).

Dr. Nesbit will address how pharmacists can play a key role in combating the epidemic of opioid misuse, abuse and overdoes that has affected the community. Patients need to be educated by pharmacists about pain and the appropriate use of opioids. Pharmacists need to reach prescribers with information on palliative pain care, addiction and overdose treatment and the deployment of medically assisted treatment for opioid dependence.
