Research:

Molecular Parasitology.
The protozoan parasite, Giardia lamblia , undergoes antigenic variation of a set of a cysteine-rich surface proteins (VSP). The laboratory is interested in determining the molecular mechanism(s) controlling the switch in expression from one vsp gene to another, and why only one vsp gene is expressed at a time.

The laboratory is actively participating in a genome project for Giardia . The project will map and determine the DNA sequence of Giardia . We are also interested in genetic structure and change in Giardia . The trophozoites have two nuclei that appear identical. We would like to understand how the inheritance of genetic material via two nuclei is handled.
